How Easter Island Moai Walked: The Science Behind the Legends
A recent study combining physics, 3D modelling, and field experiments suggests that Easter Island’s famous moai statues didn’t need rollers or sleds—but in fact “walked” upright. Designed with wide D-shaped bases and a forward lean, the statues were moved using ropes and alternating rocking motions along specially prepared roads. These findings honor the ingenuity of the Rapa Nui people, showing how they overcame monumental challenges with clever design and cooperation.
